What is an Extranet

  • An Extranet is a variation of intranet, where member nodes of the network may be under the control of different administrative domains, but still hidden from the public internet.
  • An Extranet is therefore still a private network, but branches of the extranet may be served by different ISPs.
  • Example: An enterprise network spread across multiple cities, with different ISPs connecting these branches.
The diagram given below illustrates an  Extranet of an organization with multiple branches:

A sample Extranet

In the example, ISP1 connects the main branch and Branch office1, whereas ISP2 connects the main branch and Branch office2.
