Methods of Classification of Networks

Computer Networks can be classified based on different aspects/attributes of the communicating devices.

In general, three methods of classification are popular.

They are :

a) Distance Based Classification : Here the networks are classified based on the maximum geographical distance between the communicating computers. E.g. PAN/LAN/CAN/MAN/WAN

b) Service Based Classification : Here the networks are classified based on whether the communicating computers can i) accept service  ii) offer service iii) accept and offer service E.g. Client-Server, Peer-Peer Networks

c) Administrative Control Based Classification : Here the networks are classified based on whether the communicating computers are under the control of a single administrative domain or under the control of multiple administrative domains. E.g. Intranet/Extranet/Internet
